A Day for Giving Thanks

An interesting holiday event is the National Thanksgiving Turkey Presentation. Prior to Thanksgiving each year, a turkey is brought to the White House for the president to pardon. In other words, these lucky turkeys are not allowed to be killed. Instead, they are taken to a farm and allowed to live the rest of their lives freely. This ceremony became a formal event in 1989.
Activities for children include outlining their hands on paper to make hand turkeys. Some also perform plays that portray the first Thanksgiving at school. No matter how Thanksgiving is observed, its most important message is to be thankful for everything you have and to take time for your family and loved ones.
