Thanks to Matti and his comic misadventures, many people in China are now identifying themselves as“spiritually Finnish.”Why would people so far away identify with the cultural preferences of a fictional Finnish character? For one thing, in a country of 1.4 billion people, cities in China are often unbearably crowded. So, when Chinese people see Matti struggling to deal with being around even a few people, they can easily relate. Another reason Chinese can relate to Matti is that he expresses a kind of social anxiety that is universal.
