The International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) encourages communities around the world to protect dark sites. Recently, Hehuan Mountain on the western edge of Taroko Gorge National Park became Taiwan’s first International Dark Sky Park (IDSP). This title is one of six categories in the IDA’s awardwinning International Dark Sky Places program. Becoming an IDSP is no light matter; applicants must meet several requirements and show that there is strong community support for dark sky protection. The long application process, which takes one to three years on average, was a four-year effort for Hehuan Mountain. Now it joins the list of 126 dark sites where people can look to the night sky and be amazed by the sight of the stars.
